The I-35 Bridge Collapse And a Bit of Reality

Anyone viewing pictures of cheaper home insurance recent Minneapolis area bridge collapse on I-35 was saddened, stunned, and probably given pause to reflect on their own daily travels. It could happen to me! My family! Here in my town! How could this happen in 21st century America? Who discount Prozac to blame? There is always somebody to blame, isnt there?

These are but a few of the comments and perspectives I have seen and heard since the tragic collapse. The immediate response from the ruling and media class was to call for Maryland Lemon Laws money to be invested in infrastructure. Always more money, the starving government is continually on a penurious diet forced upon them by stingy taxpayers. Give me a break.

Last night I viewed a documentary television program on the building of the Great Northern Railroad. The line was envisioned, built and funded by James J. Hill. Mr. Hill used private funds solely to construct the 1700 miles of track, bridges, stations and spur lines that became The Great Northern railroad. He was not a distant tycoon, managing the business operation from afar. Mr. Hill spent almost everyday in the field actually supervising the construction of the hard drive recovery service project.

The Great Northern was an engineering marvel. It was the northernmost of the main east/west lines built after the Civil War and was key to developing and populating the northern tier of the United States. The line was an engineering marvel, built through a vast wilderness and traversing the treacherous Rocky Mountains. Work was principally done by hand with dynamite and nitro-glycerine used as blasting agents. A key stretch of 670 miles of track and infrastructure was laid during a 15-month period alone.

Contrast this with public works projects we all view daily as we weave along our neighborhood streets and highways. Orange barrels line miles of highway, on each side, restricting traffic flow, and on many, many days, not a bulldozer, asphalt truck or workman is in sight. Jobs remain unfinished for many years. Mean while, usually in near proximity to this inactivity, we can watch whole subdivisions constructed, shopping venues go up and private property developed with speed, craftsmanship, on time (or early) and on (or under) budget.

Why the obvious disparity in work rate, productivity, and quite simply, bang for the buck that we view in private versus public development. My observation relies on the old saw; its other peoples money.

Jim Hill had his own money at risk in order to build the Great Northern railroad, get it operational and commence generating revenue and profit. Public projects face no such pressure. They are built with taxpayer, other peoples money. These projects seem abstract, faceless, and bureaucratic. The taxpayer has been numbed to the inefficiencies of government at all levels and has come to tolerate a significant amount of incompetence. This incompetence they would never tolerate in their private commercial dealings.

State and Federal Highway funds are generated each time we buy a gallon of gas, buy a license and buy a vehicle. Trucks pay heavy levies to use public right of ways. Billions of dollars are available each year. In addition Congress and State Legislatures pass highway bills and earmark funds for special and pet projects. And yet, when a bridge collapses, the first chirp we hear is a call for more tax payer monies.

Incompetence, bureaucracy, layers of red tape, endless studies and simple mismanagement result in these billions of available taxpayer dollars producing far too little in public works. Indiana recently sold the Skyway Bridge to an Australian/Spanish concern for over a billion dollars. The Skyway, from Gary to Chicago, was a constant construction snarl for years. Why would a private concern buy a supposed white elephant like this toll bridge? Simply because they will run it more efficiently, keep ahead of maintenance issues, eliminate bureaucracy and turn a profit.

Before 1983 100% of the gasoline taxes collected were devoted to highway maintenance and construction. Then the Congress, the same Congress now seeking more highway taxes, began to devote a significant portion of the gas tax to mass transit projects. The result of this co-mingled revenue is a distortion of the delivery of transit benefits. Formerly adequate funding for roads has been utilized to promote light rail and pet mass transit projects that cannot otherwise support themselves.

The Los Angeles subway is a perfect example. Politicians lusted for this boondoggle. It was built and nobody came! Light rail projects have worked almost nowhere they have been built, and yet, they are constantly proposed for cities as an alternative to road construction, as a means to aid the environment and lighten traffic loads. The goal is laudable, the reality and results are laughable.

The mismanagement of the Big Dig in Boston is another very visible example of government at work, or more accurately, not at work. This public works project was many years and billions of dollars over budget. Once finally completed, the tunnel, under the Charles River, sprung leaks. Lawsuits have been filed, fingers pointed, blame placed. I maintain that a private concern, contracted to perform the construction of the Big Dig tunnel in downtown Boston, given a profit incentive, would have finished on time (or sooner) and on budget (if not under). As it is, local, state and federal taxpayers have been forced to bite this smelly bullet.

The loss of life as a result of the I-35 tragedy is horrible. The failure of the span is a major commercial blow to the Twin Cities economy. The rebuilding will be a major inconvenience to commuters. However, the bridge did not fall because of a lack of public funds. The very agencies that are crying for more funds are directly responsible for the lack of maintenance, inefficiencies, bureaucratic bungling and mismanagement that results in such a debacle.

There are better ways to build and maintain infrastructure. Unfortunately, we, the taxpaying citizenry, are too complacent to demand the same level of competence and efficiency we expect when we buy a carton of milk, a sofa, or build a simple sunroom on a home. We have seen the enemy, and he is us.

Quick & Easy Southern Pecan Bars

1 Premium Coffee all-purpose flour
1/3 cup firmly packed brown sugar
cup butter or margarine
1 cup firmly packed brown sugar
4 eggs, room temperature
1 cup dark corn syrup

1/8 teaspoon salt
1 cups chopped pecans

He told me of an initiative that he and the Board were excited about, and had needed buy-in from their 30,000 employees. The CEO spent over a million dollars to create a high quality dog and pony show, and spent six months visiting many of the storefronts using his audio and video show to explain why the change was important and how the company and customers would benefit.

When I asked him how it went, he was excited. Everyone, he said, bought in. Everyone? Well, yes, except for about 10%.

We have assumed that by asking our target audience to tackle what we deem appropriate behavioral shifts often leading to new job descriptions, or new relationships and skills, for example we can get buy-in. But we are doing what sales people do: pitching an idea from our own map of the world and assuming that the listeners will react as we want, that with logical justification and the right amount of persuasion, we can get people to do what we want. We are pushing from the outside, hoping to get specific results from the inside.

THE SYSTEMS OF CHANGE

We actually are using guesswork: we have no idea what criteria needs to be met before others are willing to change. We have no idea what internal issues we're asking people to shift just assuming that our idea and enthusiasm and logic and pressure will create a willingness to change.

We forget that before change can happen, people must assess the requested change, and have some comfort that it matches not only their personal, internal criteria, but the criteria already present within their status quo (i.e. their job description, their relationships and status, their reporting structure, etc). If there is any incongruence, they will not easily be able to un/subconsciously buy-in, and therefore may potentially exhibit some form of acting out.

Indeed, people will only do what they are comfortable with, to the level they agree with what they're being told, or the level they understand what they've heard. It's quite impractical to assume that others will change because they're told to. And many billions of dollars, not to mention the effort, time lost, and human capital, spent by not addressing that.

People systems include all of the criteria - including rules, relationships, beliefs, history partners, world economic factors, branding and competition issues, ego needs - that the people within the system have already bought into, agreed with, and acted upon when entering the system (i.e. becoming an employee).

In fact, the entire range of criteria that folks have originally bought into is relatively impervious to change, otherwise it wouldn't be a system. And anything new that enters that system in the way of new initiatives must parallel the same norms, rules, beliefs, and implied outcomes included in the status quo, or the system will reject it.

For example, if you only buy cotton shirts, you won't wear polyester unless you reconfigure your beliefs about cotton, or your political views about fabric, or your fears of non-natural fabrics or whatever your internal issues are that led to your current belief patterns. Or if a team has been doing a job based on one set of rules for years, they may have resistance to changing their behaviors just because a new set of rules has been issued. Each person would certainly give it a try because the request comes from on-high, but s/he might not know how to work with other team members with the new rules.

Indeed, when others must agree and acquiesce to change, when rules and roles and norms and relationships and skills must change as a result, the inside' needs to shift more than the outside' the inner beliefs rather than the external behavior or rules. And throwing information at a system, and hoping it will shift because of the nature of the information or how it is presented will not lead to others making appropriate decisions to change.

But we know that, and continue to push change upon our organizations anyway, assuming that if our request is cogent and reasonable and its efficacy simple to recognize, that sensible people will be willing to 'just change'.

CHANGE OUR BELIEFS

Let's change our belief. What if we believed that:

each person each person has to buy-in to the change before they are presented with an action plan;

a system will reject any element that threatens its status quo;

people are doing the best they can at any moment, but may have conflicting sorts' to manage within the new rules. In other words, do they address problems with their colleagues, or try to manage on their own? Who do they go to? How do they know the right action to take at any given time? What if the change encroaches on their chain of command, or levels of responsibility, or interaction with clients or other departments? What if market issues are encroaching on their jobs and they don't understand the relevance of any particular change requirement? What about managing new partner relationships? A lot of ideas and responsibilities may be competing in the same category for the same mind share;

unless there is buy-in at the belief level, people may not necessarily know how, or be (un)consciously willing, to change;

people are generally willing to be compliant at a conscious level but un/subconscious issues may create a different set of buy-in behaviors that may be counter productive to the ultimate change requested;

decisions don't need to get made right away the status quo has successfully been in place until now';

disagreement up-front might end up shedding light on inherent problems with a proposed implementation, and managing the disagreement might yield a more robust solution.

In other words, people may not be aware that they have issues that are causing them to not be compliant with the change request, and that without discovering and then managing these issues up front, there will be implementation issues that may derail the success of the project. Not to mention how the change process itself could enhance implementation.

First of all: what is a culture? There are of course various definitions, but personally I like to use the one given by anthropologist Ruth Benedict (which is the more or less generally accepted one in the scientific community): "culture is a more or less consistant pattern of thought and action with a characteristic purpose that pervades the forms of behavior and institutions of a society." Hence, a culture is defined by a set of patterns.

Are "we" a "culture" (as in a religious culture, a national culture for example)? If culture is defined as being that total and all-embracing the answer to that question is NO, unless of course you would argue that BDSM-views and opinions have any specific relevance to and influence on social structures, general behavior patterns or institutions (which I personally consider quite unlikely). However, if you take the definition but add the words "limited" and "some", the answer is: yes, we are.

The opposite of the above definition, by the way, is true for the BDSM-community: i.e., the world around us (society) has a direct influence on us (general perceptions, legislation, prejudice, political and religious views, to only name a few) and not in the way they have as a general factor in everyone's life, but directly in (and as a result of) the ideals the community as well as individuals within that community strive(s) and stand(s) for. There are other methods to find out whether or not BDSM is a culture. One of them is to try and establish if there are concepts, views and behavior patterns within a "group" that seem to be more or less generally accepted and are at the root of the group behavior (chaos-theory).

Behavior patterns

Thus the question is: are there such concepts, views and behavior patterns? The answer here - in my view - is yes, there are: there is a more or less generally accepted lingo (that at least is generally recognized), there are concepts (voluntary, imformed consentual, safe and sane for example, negotiation for example, safewords for example). We may not be to good at exactly describing them, but there are norms and values: in general the community has a pretty good general idea about what is acceptable behavior in the group and what is not. In the same way there are (again not specifically written down) certain more or less generally accepted ethics.

And next to that there even is a more or less "creative process" based on the group's ideas (design, clothing, art, photography, writing and more) that usually is recognized as "belonging to or within the group".

Finally, do we have specific and more or less general behavior patterns? The answer again is yes. Coming out for example, finding information, communication and even some negative ones, like taking things personal and concentrating on personal ideas and interpretations as opposed to more general ones.

The reasons for that happening are actually quite simple. Most of "us" live in a very narrow, closed environment when it comes to BDSM (which is not a negative connotation but merely an observation and in itself a direct result of the general social stigmatism and prejudice) and as a result many people only have their personal ideas and feelings to go by, while on the other hand the subject itself directly hits home with almost all of us and brings out - understandable - fierce and intense emotions.

The Internet - even though a blessing in some ways - is not exactly helpful either, since the "net-community" seems to go through exactly the same growing pains the "real life community" (at least in Europe) has gone through some 15 to 20 years ago. Hence, for the moment on the Internet history is only repeating itself, which is not bad as such, since it helps the vast numbers of newcomers, but is of little or no help when it comes to try and debate, research more abstract issues like that one.

Different cultures

As for example Weinberg and Falk ("Studies in Sadomasochism", 1983) conclude, there is very little methodical and theoretical research from the sociological field available when it comes to BDSM. If any work has been done in that area, most of that is journalistic research and not scientific. Still, one fact is generally accepted in the scientific field (and in other areas): there are huge differences between the gay/lesbian and heterosexual BDSM-cultures.

Coming out (which to gay/lesbians is a "second coming out") for one thing is totally different, primerily because coming out as a concept is alien to the heterosexual world since it has never been a real issue. Hence there is little experience with the phenomena and whereas coming out is recognized as probably the most important stage in the life of a homosexual (and treated and respected as such), in the heterosexual world it is predominantly still ignored or undervalued.

Other main differences are in the social behavior patterns. Especially gay men - within their community - are not only more open to different forms of sexuality, it is also very common to act out preferences in a more or less public environment such as gay bars and meeting places. * BDSM is an economical factor, in the forms of products like videos, toys, gear, more or less dedicated shops, media and art galleries, clothing and such and - wether we like it or not - prostitution.
* BDSM is scientifically recognized as a phenomena of its own.
* BDSM is the subject of research in different scientific areas (psychology, psychiatry, sociology).
* BDSM is condemned by other groups, including some very influential ones.
* BDSM has lead to specific legislation to try an ban it in various countries and regions.
* BDSM is the subject of political debates and decisionmaking.

Different cultures within the community

Are there different cultures within hetero BDSM? I tend to think there are at least two: Maledom/femsub and Femdom/malesub. First of all, of course they have a lot in common. Probably eighty to ninety percent of their basic cultural patterns are exactly the same (albeit maybe slightly different in their format and presentation). However, there are a few basic differences that in my opinion make them different (mind you, I am not advocating one is better accident at work the other, just different). So where are these differences?

First of all there is a difference in social acceptance. For example, the more or less general assumption is that men can take better care of themselves when it comes to security risks. Hence, a submissive male is generally seen as "less vulnerable" when compared to female submissives. To a certain extent that is true. Male sexuality in general is more open and men are much more used to share their sexual experiences and thoughts with others than women. Men are - more than women and again generally speaking - more used to things like masturbating, exploring their sex organ and the sex organs of others and are more likely to talk about that to others and experiment. Hence they have an advantage when it comes to taking risks and coping with vulnerability. that, by the way, should not be taken as a statement that the male submissive actually is or feels less vulnerable, because that is probably not true.

Another main difference is in the difference in sexual experience. The male experience simply is a more physical one, whereas the female experience is much more mental. that brings about differences in attitude, play forms, safety issues and interaction as well as a couple of cultural differences such as the fact that female submissives are much more receptive - and have a different attitude towards - fantasy.

Female submissives have other cultural differences, such as the conflict of roles (mother, career person, central function in the household/relationship and submissive) which is much more dominant to them then it is to male submissives (and usually much more of a problem). And to many there is the female (social) masochism and role-stereotyping in general (that is not good, but still very much "there").

There probably is a long list of other differences, one that should for example be considered is the fact that as a result of the widespread commercialization of the Femdom world, it is a lot easier for male subs to at least find a format to live out their fantasies than it is for female subs.

Is it functional to recognize such differences? I think it is. Not in an effort to conveniently cut up the cake in very tiny pieces in order to find sufficent similarities to determine one specific group, but in an effort to try and identify the differences and address them. Like brothers and sisters are part of the same family, they have their own specifics wants, needs, dynamics and interactions and understanding each other better starts with identifying and understanding the specifics of the other, identifying where differences and where similarities are. Just as it often is very counterproductive to address certain problems by only using either male or female logic (ultimately the combination of both is what usually produces result) it is not very productive to try and push everyone "into the same corset" when it comes to defining cultures. I've just identified myself as a visual person by asking, "Do you see what these statements are communicating?"

Visual: Paint pictures in the minds of your clients. Use words which help them visualize the benefits. "Imagine the look on her face when you open that little box and she sees this gorgeous ring."

Auditory: Use words that describe what others might say i.e., "What do you think your admin staff will say when they find out this software will cut their filing time in half? Can you hear their excitement?"

Kinesthetic: Use words that evoke emotional involvement i.e., "Imagine how great it will feel to own a home that's in the best school district. Not to mention, you won't have to fight traffic anymore since you'll live right down the street from your office."

You've heard it before, but it's something we need to keep in the front of our minds: We must shut up and listen when others are talking. By paying attention, you will learn how others like to be presented to. Remember, people like to work with people who think like they do.

Adopt these communication strategies and you will be on your way down the path of least resistance.

Recently, I had a dream which had a dramatic impact on my blog way of looking at the world. During the dream, God clearly conversed with me in an audible tone. I recall what He said because it startled me to the point of waking me out of a deep sleep. When I was finally more lucid, I recall Jesus saying to me - "I am a right-wing Republican, and you have been remiss in failing to follow in my footsteps!"

I immediately sensed that His statement would have the affect of turning my world upside down. I got up, took a shower, had breakfast and contemplated what I should do in response to this perplexing news. Immediately my mind flashed to Pat Robertson, the preacher from The 700 Club who miraculously leg-pressed 2000lbs. If anyone could confirm the veracity of my synchronistic, spiritual experience it would Reverend Robertson. It was Pat Robertson, along with Oral Roberts, Jerry Falwell and others who had ample experience with this issue of divine intervention. So I contacted Pat Robertson to make sure that I was not delusional. Pat emailed me back providing me with confirmation that I was clearly hearing the voice of God.

Trusting Pat's wisdom regarding my pipeline to the Almighty, I realized that indeed Jesus had talked to me and was staking His claim as a bonifide right-wing Republican. My mind then aimlessly wandered to another thought. What changes was I supposed to make in response to this dramatic disclosure? In order to follow in His footsteps, what issue did I need to proclaim with evangelical fervor? Numerous ideas flooded my mind. If I was to be God's vessel, I needed to:

Dissociate myself from any vestiges of Hollywood. Burn all of my CD's with the exception of my Bon Jovi collection.
Renounce global warming since it is the brain-child of internet guru Albert Gore.
No longer watch The Oprah Show.
Practice the word abomination. Write it ten times in a sentence for a week.
Learn to think black and white without being wishy-washy.
Believe in my beliefs even if they contradict my experience.
Embrace the euphemism of pro-life even though it is inconsistent with the eyes of despair and death from pre-emptive war.
Believe that the United States is the only country that receives God's special blessing and favor.
Profess that the axis of evil only exists in the hearts and minds of other countries, never our own.
Believe that some sins are worse than others, especially the Big Three.
Renounce the concept of separation of church and state because our country was founded on Christian principles. Faith-based initiatives should receive tax breaks even if they are exclusionary.
Keep the government out of dictating whatever people want to do even if it hurts themselves or others.

As I pondered my new list of proclamations, I felt a sense of relief. All of my new "talking points" were simple and Krofft Supershow God had delivered His message. Like it or not, construction companies face a great deal more challenges in Love and Rockets issue of fraud than other types of companies do. The fraudster's accomplice will act as the middle man, usually receiving a kickback for his part in the fraud.

Perhaps using the names of old movie monsters is a bit dramatic, but for what the owners of construction companies go through after these guys or gals are done, it may not be nearly dramatic enough. These types of frauds have been responsible for shutting down what were pretty solid companies. Those that were lucky enough to survive the horrors still shudder at the thought of these 'monsters'.
